Cheltenham Gold Cup Trends

Nailing down the winner of the coveted Cheltenham Gold Cup is never an easy task, but key trends can certainly point you in the right direction and can whittle down the field for you. Here are the main trends to note below:

  • Don't back a horse older than 9
  • Don't back a horse who has never run at Cheltenham before
  • Look for a horse who ran in at least three chases
  • Look for a horse who has won at least two chases
  • Look for a horse who Has won a Grade 1 before
  • Look for a horse who has won on a left-handed track
  • The winner will likely not have run for at least 33 days before the Gold Cup, but had run at least once that season
  • The winner likely last ran in Ireland or at Newbury
  • Look for a horse won last time out or last won at the last Cheltenham Festival
  • Look for a horse who Has won over at least 3m before
  • Look for a horse who is officially rated 164 or higher
  • Typically, the highest-rated horse in the field does not win the race

Irish Dominance In Recent Years

Since Lord Windermere's shock success in the race in 2014, the Irish have a real stranglehold on the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Since 2014, there have been eight winners trained in Ireland, and the Irish have won the last five renewals on the bounce. Master trainer Willie Mullins, who only saddled his first Gold Cup winner in 2019 with Al Boum Photo, has won the race three times now courtesy of Al Boum Photo again in 2020 and Galopin Des Champs in 2023.

What is a Cheltenham Gold Cup Free Bet?

A free bet for the Gold Cup is a bet which is passed to you for free which you can use to place a bet on the Gold Cup for real money. Keep in mind there are lots of different types of free bets and bookmaker offers and they all have different terms and conditions so it's important to read these before you bet.

Free bets are typically rewarded as credit rather than real money. You can claim it by depositing your own money unless you claim a no deposit bonus. The first bet you make after depositing is called your qualifying bet which activates the bonus or free bet amount and typically has minimum odds attached, for example (1.50) which is 1/2.

After you have placed your qualifying bet you'll receive your free bet sign up offer. You can use this to place a bet and no money will be taken from your balance. It is essentially a bet credit at the odds of the bet you placed. If you do manage to win, your free bet value will be deducted from the returns. For example if you back a horse at 7/1 and it wins you’ll return €70.

What is the Cheltenham Festival?

The Cheltenham Festival is a four-day meeting at Prestbury Park in Cheltenham and is a huge festival in the National Hunt racing calendar in Britain, with huge prize money on offer across all four days of action. The four-day event takes place every year in March and it is hugely popular with the Irish, who go over in their droves to support their local horses and trainers. Typically, the festival runs through Saint Patrick's Day so it is a real green festive week even though it is hosted in England.

The main feature races of the week include several Grade 1 contests including the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase, Ryanair Chase and Stayers' Hurdle. Enormous sums of money are gambled on every race and hundreds of millions of pounds are bet over the term of the week. Cheltenham has an incredible atmosphere, including the "Cheltenham roar", which refers to the huge amount of noise that the crowd generates as the starter raises the tape for the first race of the festival, the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.
