There are plenty of names to look out for in the feature race of the Royal Ascot festival. Eldar Eldarov is seeking to become the first horse in nearly ten years to claim a prestigious double of the Gold Cup and St Leger in the same season, and certainly has the pedigree to do it. However, Coltrane looked sensational in winning the Ascot Stakes the last time round, and is the bookies’ favourite to win here. With the unbeaten Courage Mon Ami bound to be in the mix too, this looks a sensational race in prospect.

Wellington perhaps above all horses is one that could surprise either way, having raced his whole career in Hong Kong where he has won Groups 1s and even beaten the world’s current highest-rated sprinter in the prestigious Premier Bowl Handicap. We reckon Richard Gibson’s 6-year-old can upset the apple cart here, especially with Ryan Moore on mount.

In terms of the top trainer at Royal Ascot, in recent years the name Aidan O’Brien has become synonymous with success as the Berkshire course. O’Brien has led the trainers’ list at the festival in seven of the last ten years, including at the 2022 meet with five winners. At the 2016 meet the Irish trainer led the way with an incredible seven winners. O’Brien runners are sure to attract a lot of attention here, and deserve a second look on any list. 

Jockeys

There is perhaps one name above all that crops up when it comes to Royal Ascot jockeys, and that name is the legendary Frankie Dettori.
